Culture & Social Living of Karanam of Andhra Pradesh
Karanam Culture, especially in Andhra Pradesh, is associated with Niyogi Brahmins. They have common festivals which were/are celebrated by Brahmins, but Karanams, unlike the rest of the Brahmins, were warriors, administrators, ministers, reformers in pre-independent colonial India i.e. more like the Samurais of Japan. Typically, Niyogi Brahmins take on secular vocations such as the Karanam position, which is a highly esteemed position in villages because Karanams are tantamount to upwardly mobile members of the village i.e. aristocrats. Historically, the Karanam position is patrilineally passed down from father to eldest son and this position stays within the family. But in the early 1980s, N.T. Rama Rao, a prominent actor and politician, mandated that the Karanam position be rescinded. In place of a Karanam, he established a Mandal officer position which is granted based on merit and scholarship, not based on caste thereby giving opportunity to people from any caste to contest for such a position. Karanam Culture also has roots in Kayastha of North India. Kayastha believe they are descendants of Chitra Gupta. Accounting is the main profession for Kayastha. Like Kayastha, most Karanams in Andhra Pradesh are the head village accountants for their respective villages. The prominent personalities in the (Sista) Karanam community: Late Shri Polumahanthi Suryanarayana Patnaik, who called by the people around as BABA with great honour and a well known personality was the Kanaram of Urajam, Srikakulam District and made his strong marks on the community development. Balivada Rama Rao Patnaik from vijayawada, in the time of 1979, he fought for Karnams with government and he gone for jail to consider the sisti karanams as BC. Late Kottu Lakshmana Rao, who worked as President for 3 Mandals in Vizianagaram during early 1980s brought out a monthly magazine by name, 'Sista Darsini' and laid a foundation stone for a Kalyana Mandapam in Garividi exclusively for sista karanams.
Jobs
Karanam is a writer-caste. Its a sect of Brahman, whose vocation or kulavruthi (caste profession) is writing and/or professions that need writing skills such as documentation of land and property titles, accounts maintenance, legal writing, lawyers etc. Karnams, primarily, had jobs as bureaucrats and government officials before the 1980s. In the past, they are well educated, wealthy, and good administrators; many people from Niyogi caste were government officers, employees, teachers, professors, principals, lawyers, and doctors in Northern Andhra Pradhesh and Orissa border districts. Now a days, many of them are employed as Software professionals, doctors, etc in foreign countries therefore the NRI (Non-resident Indian) population is increasing rapidly.

DeleteThere are Karanam in Bihar in North in Tiirhut and in South Bihar in Gaya Region. They are a writer caste like the rest, keeping village land records.Karanams moved out from Bihar region all over India with the expansion of Mauryan Empire. In Sanskrit Word Karnam has two meanings 1. a group of writers and 2. a group of Buddhist monks. That means these community was the general staff of Mauryan Empire and the core of Buddhist growth and spread.Makers of India and creators of Asian culture.

DeleteKaranakamme is a brahmin subcaste in Andhra pradesh. it is said that these karanakamme vyaparlu are maharastrian brahmins migrated to andhra long ago and are now considered as vyapara karanalu or karana kamma niyogulu.Karanakamma vaidikulu are also there. But this group has no connection with kamma caste. It is believed that Kamma is a kind of sainika caste during mediavel andhra dynasties whose kulvritti is vyavasayam and sainika vritti. They are graded as upper class Sudra varna alongside kapu, velama and reddy

DeleteNo kamma is different caste but there are some similarities among their culture but karanam is the sub caste of Bramhins which is known as niyogi bramhins .karanams follow all the karma kand as bramhins but only difference is they do not accept Danam.
ReplyDeleteThough my brother and I do agree with you on your statement, "Karnam is the sub caste of Brahmins which is known as niyogi brhamins, karnams follow all the karma kand as brahmins but only difference is they do not accept Danam" many of own relatives, friends and society in general do not accept our brahminical style of living. We feel like "fish out of water". We strictly follow vegetarian food habits, wear sacred thread, do 'Sandhya Vandhan", wear traditional dress "pancha kacham" by married men, "madisar" by married women. When we do all these, people around us either mistake us or look at us sarcastically. Definitely we are in a fix. Please help us out from this conflict with some authentic information preferably drawn from traditional Indian Literature.

ReplyDeleteActually karanam/karana is not a caste.its a position in royal managementand administration, these posts were called as karanam.A village head is also known as karanam at the ancient time.if you study about the Puri Jagannath temple,Odisha there are 6 types of karana/karanam appointed as 1.Mapa Saita Karana 2. Tadhau Karana 3. Deula Karna 4. Baithi Karan 5. Kotha Karana 6. Charcha Karana and these karanas are basically niyogi bramhins who brought to puri by Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva to serve the temple in 11th century.he brought five bramhin families from south india and appointed them for the accountant, administration, record keeping and to maintain all the temple income and expenditure and organizing all meetings regards the temple administration matter.
